Elephant Trunk Hill is located in Xiangshan park, where the Taohua river meets the Lijiang river, which is named after its distinctive shape, where elephants stretch their noses into the river to drink.
Since ancient times, numerous poets have praised the beauty of Xiangbi mountain. Among them, former President Yang Shangkun once said, “without Xiangbi mountain in Guilin, there would be no Guilin. The grotto covers an area of about 150 square kilometers, is 17 meters long, 9.5 meters wide and 12 meters high. It is shaped like a full moon, and complements the moon cave in Chuanshan park (south of Xiangbi mountain, with a higher elevation). More than 50 cave wall stone carvings, is the Guangxi key cultural relic protection unit. From these stone inscriptions, you can glimpse the history of the Taiping heavenly kingdom.
Useful tips
The best season is from April to November. The dry season runs from December to march. Xiangshan is also in low season because of the low water level. Visit in spring, summer and fall and you will have more fun.
Best times – morning and evening. You can enjoy different scenery at different times. The misty weir mountain in the early morning, especially in spring, creates a hazy beauty. And at night, the elephant hill is filled with glowing and jelly-colored lights that are dreamland that can’t be missed especially for photography lovers.
Climbing tip: the trails around and up the mountain provide excellent views and shade on busy streets. However, you need to be prepared for particularly steep stairs (very slippery in rainy weather) and wear comfortable shoes.
