Golmud Travel Tips
Climate and Weather
Golmud belongs to a plateau climate, with not overly hot summers, yet with freezing winters. The average annual temperature stays around 4.3℃, with extremes at 35 and -33.6℃. In addition, Golmud is also characterized by its dryness--the annual average precipitation is 50mm.
The reason Golmud gradually became a tourist city was due in large part to the fact that it is one of the few gateways in to Tibet. You may expect throngs of trekkers in summer, while the other three seasons are generally not so popular.
Qinghai can, however, be of a fairly inhospitable climate, and, with an elevation of around 2,800 meters above sea level, Golmud is of no exception. At this height sunlight can be exceptionally dazzling, making the need for UV protection an essential part of any traveler’s packing. Even with warm summer temperatures, night temperatures are almost always cold.
