Baiyuan Garden

Baiyuan Garden is located on the northern slope of Xiangshan Hill to the south of Luoyang. It is built in honor of the Tang poet Bai Juyi. The garden, including Bai's tomb, combines the charm of different gardens in both the north and China and is a typical representation of horticulture in this region.

Baiyuan Garden is located at the east hill of Longmen, opposite slightly to one side of the Longmen Grottoes across the Yihe River. It actually refers to the mausoleum of Bai Juyi, an outstanding poet of the Tang Dynasty who lived between AD 772 and AD 846. The tomb of the great poet is laid on Pipa peak in the garden.

The tomb of Bai Juyi is a round mound of earth, 4 meters high, with a circumference of 52 meters. In front of the tomb stands a tombstone of 2.80 meters high, which reads, “The Tomb of Bai Juyi”.

The important scenic spots in the Baiyuan Garden are Qinggu, Tingyi Pavilion, Letian Hall, Bai Pavilion, Bird’s Head Gate, Peak Pipa, Bai Juyi’s Tomb, Daoshi Reading Room, etc.

As a garden constructed in the style of the Tang Dynasty, it is a good place to console with the great poet as well as a tourist resort.

Bai Juyi led a miserable life in his early days, became an official later, but was dismissed from his post and displaced, spending the last 18 years of his life in Luoyang. After his death, he was buried in the Dongshan Hill in Longmen, Luoyang.

Bai Ju Yi, who also went by the name Le Tian, was born in AD 772 in Xinzheng, Henan province. He was said to left his hometown around the age of 16 to seek a career in the capital city.
