Forest Park
Covering an area of 532 hectares (1,315 acres), Guiyang Forest Park is located 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) southeast of downtown Guiyang. With a sea of various rare plants, animals and many other tourist resources, the park is an ideal choice for tourists to relax in the nature.
Forest Park used to the place where Guizhou Forest Science Academy made plant experiments. In 1960, the then Premier Zhou Enlai went to Guiyang for inspection, he was deeply attracted by wonderful scenery presented by lush vegetation of various kinds covering along the rolling mountains. Therefore, a forest park was built later under Premier Zhou's instructions.
Dozens of forest zones are divided for various plants of Catalpa, Camphor Trees, Teak, Pine, and Alamo. They are all well-preserved. With a forest coverage percentage amounting to 90%, the park is densely wooded As a result; it offers an ideal environment to have some fresh air and pure view. It is definitely a perfect summer resort to enjoy the shade and gentle breezes. It is also the home of some wild animals including squirrels, pangolins, owls, pheasants, thrushes, hedgehogs, roes, hares, weasels and so on. You will be lucky if you get sight of them. Of course, you won't miss the beautiful sun rise, sun set and rimpling cloud seas. at the top of Richu Peak.
Historical relics and sites could be found in the park as well. Zhongshan Hall is rebuilt to commemorate Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the great forerunner of Chinese revolution. The north gate of the park-Tuyunguan Pass, which is the first entrance to the South Guizhou, holds an strategic position in ancient time, it has long been an military stronghold. The white marble monument erected near Fucui Pavilion is in memory of international red cross medical team which came to help Chinese people during the Sino-Japanese War. Today many ancient carvings and steles are well preserved along the cliff.
Gardens are indispensable part in Chinese park .There is no exception to Forest Park; there are Buddhist resort-Guanyin (the Mother Buddha) Pavilion, Apple Garden, Deer Garden and Cherry Blossoms Garden etc. Walking around the gardens and you can enjoy the landscape to your delight.
Forest Park is listed as on of Eight Beautiful Sceneries in Guiyang due to its diverse resources and landscape. Being a AAA scenic area ,it is currently the oldest and largest city park in the nation.
