The Ghost City in Fengdu
Ghost City, a town with 1900 years history, derived its name from the legend that all the dead people have to come here to register after death, making here a home to the soul of the descent people. It is also a place where the Chinese traditional cultures assemble, Confucianists, Buddhists and Daoists are included. In addition, cultural heritages of various styles here form a unique scene, among them there are over 30 halls and lots of relics.
Since the Tang Dynasty, forty-eight temples have been built in this place, such as the 'Hall of the Jade Emperor,' the 'Palace of Hell,' 'Boundary Between the Living and the Dead,' the 'Bridge of Helplessness' and the 'Balcony of Nostalgia.' All of the temples there look quite magnificent while statues are extremely lifelike.
In the year of 2009, the completion of Three Gorges Dam heightened the water up to 175 meters high, which seemed to swallow the old county of Fengdu. Fortunately, more than 90 percent of the scenic spots located in Fengdu County remained intact due to their high location, leaving people a wonderful place to learn about the ancient Chinese culture and experience a special expedition.
