Ancient Dapeng Fortress
Dapeng Fortress with the length of 1200 m and the height of 6 m was built in Ming Dynasty (1364-1644). The Dapeng fortress with thousands of bluestone was of great strategic significance in defense of the invasion of the Japanese pirates, that is where the abbreviation of Shenzhen, Pengcheng City, is derived from.
Covering a total area of 110,000 square meters, Dapeng Fortress is hailed as a huge fossil, from which you can learn a lot about the Chinese history. Splendid ancient gate, the magnificent General mansion, folk houses with antique flavors and old streets paved with stone plates are the well-preserved materials that can tell you the special culture and customs of itself.
The Dapeng Fortress Museum is established in the year 1996 with a view of managing and researching historical relics as well as boosting tourism. Later in 2001, the site was taken under state protection and now it attracts international attention. In June 2004, a group of World Bank experts began researching the fortress with the aim of helping with protection. Shenzhen is expected to obtain special loans from the World Bank for the protection of cultural relics if a report on the fortress is adopted in about two months.
